Leadership in Computer Science
Due to Turing's intelligence, he was a respected figure in the field. He was not a leader in a conventional sense. Rather, he was a leader with his mind, setting precursors to future inventions, leading a movement to a computer age.
Entscheidungs Problem
In 1936, Turing published a paper titled "On Computable Numbers, with an Application to the Entscheidungs Problem".
"The machine is supplied with a "tape" running through it, and divided into sections each capable of bearing a "symbol"... If at each stage the motion of a machine is completely determined by the configuration, we shall call the machine an "automatic machine" or a-machine".
- Alan Turing
"Systems of Logic Based on Ordinals"
In 1938, Turing submitted a dissertation for his PhD at Princeton University titled "Systems of Logic Based on Ordinals".
"Computing Machinery and Intelligence"
In 1950, Turing published a paper titled "Computing Machinery and Intelligence", examining the famous "Imitation Game" or "Turing Test", as well as digital computers.
"I propose to consider the question, 'Can machines think?' ... It is played with three people, a man, a woman, and an interrogator. The interrogator stays in a room apart from the other two. The object of the game for the interrogator is to determine which of the other two is the man and which is the woman." |
